TCF Canada reading: 10 tips that actually raise your score

Reading is the most trainable TCF Canada skill: no audio to chase, no examiner to face — just you, 39 questions, and 60 minutes. These are the ten habits that separate candidates who plateau from candidates who climb into the NCLC 7–9 range.

Use the structure of the test

• •1. Respect the difficulty curve. Questions run roughly A1 to C2 in order. Bank the early questions fast — 30–45 seconds each — to buy three minutes per question at the hard end, where you need them.
• •2. Never leave a blank. No penalty for wrong answers means a guess is free points-in-expectation. Eliminate one or two options first and your odds jump from 25% to 50%.
• •3. Question first, then document. Read the question and the four options before the text: you will read with a purpose instead of memorising details you will not need.

Read each document type the way it wants to be read

• •4. Notices, signs, and small ads (early questions): the answer is almost always a purpose — what is this FOR? Train the reflex: informer, conseiller, proposer, interdire, inviter.
• •5. Emails and letters (middle): identify the sender-recipient relationship and what the sender wants the recipient to DO. Half the questions are exactly that.
• •6. Press articles (late): the first sentence usually carries the main idea; the rest is development. For 'De quoi parle cet article ?' questions, distractors quote real details that are NOT the main point — a mentioned detail is not the answer.
• •7. Gap-fill vocabulary questions: read the full sentence for register and collocation, not just the blank. The trap options are near-synonyms that collocate wrongly (soutien vs support is a classic).

Manage the clock and the traps

• •8. Checkpoint at question 20 by minute 25. If you are behind, speed up in the middle, not at the end — the last ten questions genuinely need thinking time.
• •9. Beware 'true but not asked'. The most effective TCF distractors are factually present in the text but answer a different question. Reread the question stem before committing.
• •10. Keep an error log by question type, not just by word. 'I fall for main-idea traps on articles' is fixable; 'I got question 31 wrong' is not information.

How to practise

Alternate full timed mocks (exam stamina, pacing) with untimed deep reviews (why was every wrong option wrong?). Between mocks, read real French daily — news sites, service announcements, classified ads — because the exam's documents are deliberately ordinary French from daily life. When your mocks hold above 30/39 two weeks running, you are working at an NCLC 8 pace and can shift training time to a weaker skill.
